Studying Geography at university forms a foundation for lifelong learning and a fulfilling career. This course teaches students 'how to learn' so that they can acquire knowledge and apply effective learning methods to different modules in their Geography degrees. These cross-cutting skills focus on ‘tools of the trade’ and ‘unspoken rules’ that allow everyone to succeed academically. Working with their Academic Advisors in small tutorial groups, students explore techniques for writing, reading, critical thinking, and presenting their ideas in academic rigorous ways. In addition, the module introduces key concepts and methods in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), using spatial data to develop a visual understanding of the human and physical worlds. Finally, training for employability is provided through authentic, work-based scenarios and activities in conjunction with the university's Career Studio. Assessed coursework will focus on: (i) expressing ideas and arguments in clear and structured ways through the essay form; (ii) applying specialist software techniques to illustrate and interpret spatial data, all with a view to informing real-life decisions; and (iii) enhancing employability by applying frameworks and techniques in Enterprise-thinking. By the end of the module students will be well-equipped to apprehend diverse forms of knowledge and work opportunities arising from the study of Geography.
