This module develops intermediate skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with a focus on Human Geography applications. Students will learn how to acquire, manage, and visualise spatial data from the UK Census and other sources. Through lectures and guided practicals, students will apply GIS to analyse human mobility and spatial interaction in retail, employment, and urban geographies. Geodemographic classifications, catchment models, basic spatial statistics, and map design for effective communication will be explored. Emphasis is placed on critically interpreting spatial patterns, recognising data limitations, and linking GIS outputs to wider topics in Human Geography including population dynamics, commuting, and deprivation. Assessment combines practical mapping with critical written analysis to inform decisions in real-world policy contexts. Upon completion, students will be equipped to use GIS confidently for further study, research, and graduate employment.
