Learning how to do ethical and rigorous research is of critical importance in the contemporary world. This module introduces students to the core qualitative and quantitative techniques that are used in the Social Sciences, and the key methodological debates around knowledge, ethics, and data analysis. In doing so, the module aims to deliver the research skills training that will enable students to successfully complete their field classes and dissertations, as well as be widely applicable in employment positions requiring research skills. Students will be introduced through lectures and hands-on practical sessions to methods which help us understand and interpret the world we live in. The module is split into two sections – one qualitative and one quantitative, each with a different assessment. The qualitative section will cover methods such as interviews, focus groups, ethnography, and textual and visual analysis and is assessed through a critical reflection piece. The quantitative section will continue the core statistical training for Geographers begun in first year and is assessed by a report produced through the analysis of a quantitative dataset.
