Liverpool is a fascinating and diverse city, providing the perfect location to bring human geography to life. This module utilises Liverpool’s unique qualities to introduce key concepts and practices, relating them to our local and regional landscape and connecting to global issues. Through a combination of field excursions, lectures and practical exercises students explore many aspects of Liverpool including its history, cultures, environment and socio-demographic characteristics. Scale is of particular relevance to geographical enquiry and Liverpool is at the heart of a network that stretches across the globe. We will be exploring the macro through local exploration. This helps us appreciate what it means to be in Liverpool. We will also explore how the city is interconnected regionally, nationally and internationally and what Liverpool can teach us about global issues. The module is designed to help students understand the connection between geographical theory and and real-world examples. Skills developed include quantitative and qualitative data collection, interpretation and analysis. The module provides a solid foundation for students to develop their own research in future years. It is assessed through a quantitative data online quiz and a field-based coursework exercise.
