As a result of human activities, biodiversity, habitats and landscapes are in peril. We urgently need to act to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, yet this is far from straightforward. Socio-ecological systems are complex; biodiversity faces a multitude of threats and there are no easy one-size-fits-all solutions. This module will explore the challenges facing biodiversity, how ecological theory can inform conservation and what new approaches might enable us to better conserve, restore, and rewild our world. The module will be taught via lectures, and interactive sessions (e.g. discussions, hands-on activities) and a local fieldtrip to develop a multidisciplinary understanding of the range of approaches that can be used to tackle the biodiversity crisis. Assessment includes group work, and individual reports on specific case studies/issues. Critically, the module builds foundational ecological understanding and combines this with real-world challenges to develop critical skills and in-depth conservation knowledge in our students.
