This module introduces the major human-driven threats facing our oceans and explores how activities such as pollution, climate change and resource use affect marine species, habitats and ecosystems. Students investigate the sources, scale and severity of different impacts, examine real scientific case studies and learn how ecological processes are altered from individuals to whole communities. Teaching combines research-led lectures, interactive workshops and guided group work, helping students build up their knowledge of the topic whilst developing critical thinking, scientific communication and collaborative skills. Assessment includes a group video presentation based on an influential research paper and a final exam, ensuring students gain a strong theoretical foundation in how we understand, manage and mitigate threats to marine environments.
