International Planning Studies

Code: SOES305

Credits: 30

Semester: Whole Session

Around the globe different states have evolved systems of planning to regulate the development and use of land, allocate development rights, and anticipate and mitigate the environmental impacts of development. The evolution of these systems has long been characterised by a cross-national exchange of ideas, models and approaches. More recently globalisation and challenges such as climate change have led to interest in how different planning systems and cultures address ecological, social and economic issues. Inspired by this context, this module explores the international dimensions of planning. It introduces key concepts, research strategies and methods in contemporary international planning studies. It examines ways of characterising and comparing planning systems, the global agenda for planning, and diverse transnational and cross-border contexts for planning. Through lectures and an overseas European field study students completing the module will gain a critical understanding of how planning works to addresses contemporary planning challenges in different contexts.
