Understanding Places and Communities

Code: SOES103

Credits: 30

Semester: Whole Session

This module provides an exciting introduction to the skills you need as a Planning student. In the first semester, students are introduced to core academic skills, including writing, academic referencing, responsible use of digital technologies, GIS software, and oral communication. By the end of the first semester, students will submit an essay demonstrating their skills of academic literature, academic integrity, responsible use of digital technologies, and critical analysis. In the second semester, students will undertake an employability exercise that introduces them to career opportunities in urban and environmental planning. This will include assessment of a digital story and a personalised CV that can be used to pursue future career and work experience opportunities. The second semester will also advance GIS skills through a series of practical exercises that support students in developing an assessed portfolio of GIS material. Throughout the module, learning and teaching is delivered through larger lectures, smaller group tutorials, practical GIS exercises and a one-day field class.
