Code: MODL326

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 2

This module introduces students to the languages and cultures of comics, equipping them with tools to read and critically engage with graphic narratives across media. Taught by specialists in Italian, Chinese, German, Francophone, Lusophone, Arabic, and Translation Studies, it explores transnational comics cultures and industries beyond the Anglosphere. The focus is on contemporary authors documenting forgotten histories and challenging visual representations of race, gender, identity, and belonging. The syllabus includes autobiographies, memoirs, travelogues, and stories of migration, colonialism, and resistance. Each week features a new author, with lectures and seminars deepening understanding of comics language in relation to culture, media, translation, and politics. Tutorials support students in preparing for assessments. All study materials are provided in English.
