Electromagnetism is at the heart of almost everything in modern electrical and electronic engineering — from the behaviour of circuits and components to the operation of communication systems, electric motors and emerging technologies. This module builds on your first-year foundations to deepen your understanding of electric and magnetic fields and introduce the mathematical tools engineers use to analyse them.
You’ll develop confidence with vector calculus, learn how to evaluate line, surface and volume integrals, and explore how charge, current and fields interact in real engineering systems. As the module progresses, you’ll study Maxwell’s equations — the cornerstone of electromagnetics — and discover how they explain key phenomena such as induction, electromagnetic waves and energy flow.
Through lectures and weekly problem-solving tutorials, you’ll gain the theoretical and analytical skills needed for higher level modules and professional engineering practice. By the end, you’ll be able to apply fundamental electromagnetic theory to practical engineering scenarios, from basic transmission lines to wave behaviour in space.
