The dissertation module is your chance to dive deep into an independent research project that will make a real impact in the field of health innovation using data science or artificial intelligence (AI) approaches. You will identify a crucial gap in existing knowledge, formulate a compelling research question, and apply appropriate, state-of-the-art methods to create a substantial and original research piece. Your project can be tailored to your interests and career goals, whether your focus is on statistical modelling, epidemiology, health data analysis, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or the responsible evaluation and implementation of AI in healthcare.
You will be supported by a faculty member who specialises in your chosen analysis approach, and there may be opportunities to collaborate with healthcare professionals or other external partners. Using existing data from ethically approved studies, or well-defined secondary data sources, you will engage critically with the literature, select and justify appropriate methodologies and communicate your findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Throughout this module, you will refine your critical thinking, time management, academic writing, and communication skills. The module culminates in a 10,000-word dissertation that demonstrates your ability to conduct rigorous, independent research and to apply data science or AI methods responsibly in a health context. This module is ideal for students who wish to contribute to real-world health innovation through high-quality research. Many of our graduates have gone on to present their dissertation findings at international conferences and publish in prestigious peer-reviewed journals, highlighting the relevance and impact of their work.
