During this module students Plutarch's essay on How to Study Poetry (approx. 1,500 lines), and at the same time develop their comprehension and competence in ancient Greek language to an advanced level. Plutarch's argument is relevant for anyone studying the Classics, but as part of his analysis the second-century CE philosopher of the so-called 'Second Sophistic' engages very closely with ancient poetry. By reading Plutarch, and his sources, students continue to expand their knowledge of Greek grammar, phonology and morphology and enhance their translation skills, by reference to an intricate, tightly argued philosophical text whose linguistic and literary features are designed to educate and persuade.
