During this module students read a selection of (approx. 1,000 lines) of Homeric hexameter poetry from the Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics “green and yellow” range (either the Iliad or the Odyssey or the Hymns), and at the same time develop their comprehension and competence in ancient Greek language to an advanced level. Homeric poetry is the foundational and most influential text of ancient Greek civilization. It is immensely interesting not only for the mythological narrative and religious and social contexts, but also for the rich epic diction, literary devices and motifs, as well as morphology, grammar and metre, Whilst getting to grips with these (and other) aspects of the poems, students continue to expand their knowledge of Greek grammar, vocabulary, phonology and morphology and enhance their translation skills, with the aid of a modern scholarly commentary.
