Introduction to Classical Literature offers a comprehensive introduction to the major literary genres of ancient Greece and Rome, exploring the defining works, authors, and cultural contexts of the classical world. The module is divided into two halves. Semester 1 provides a survey of Greek and Roman literature, introducing students to the principal genres of antiquity—epic (with particular focus on the Iliad), elegy, lyric, drama, oratory, and historiography—and their most representative authors and works. Semester 2 offers an in-depth analysis of Homer’s Odyssey, exploring its themes, structure, composition, reception. Teaching will be in the form of two weekly lectures (one on Greek and one on Latin literature) and fortnightly workshops. Lectures will provide historical and literary background of texts, introduce key concepts, and frame major interpretative debates. They will also further students’ understanding of genre conventions. Workshops will allow students not only to develop competencies in literary interpretation, but also to cultivate skills in academic writing, including identifying and citing primary and secondary sources.
