The module explores the Iron Age in western and central Europe from 800 BC until the advent of Roman occupation. The module provides a detailed understanding of Iron Age Europe, the types of archaeological evidence encountered, and how to employ critical method in approaching this information. Geographical focus is on Britain, within the context of continental material (especially Austria, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain). We cover development of the field of Iron Age studies, discussing the role of textual evidence, settlement and land use, traditions of artefact deposition, burial traditions (high-status women, warriors, bog bodies), understanding social organisation and the mechanism of social change, looking in detail at the nature of political contact with the Mediterranean (Etruria and Greece) and finally, encountering Rome.
