This first-year module introduces students to the iconic ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean and Near East. It will outline broad chronological frameworks and interconnections between different parts of the ancient world of relevance underpinning later studies. Students will learn about famous sites, their material culture and some key themes in the study of the ancient world including the development of the earliest cities and states, how the Mediterranean and Near East became an interconnected network, key social, political and economic developments. The module will be delivered through a combination of lectures and museum based practicals with 1 field trip.
