Roman Worlds 1 deals with the history and society of Italy and the wider Roman world from the foundation of Rome to the death of Julius Caesar.
Students will learn about Italy before the Romans, the Roman conquest of the Italian peninsula, the Mediterranean expansion, the reforms of the Gracchi brothers and the many internal conflicts preparing the transition from Republic to Empire. A combination of event-focused and thematic lectures will provide a sound chronological, geographical and conceptual framework for understanding the Roman Republican era.
The module will introduce students to reading archaeological, material and textual evidence in order to evaluate their historical significance. A range of scholarly views on ancient Roman history will be explored too.
