Applied Biochemistry

Code: BIOS306

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 2

This module enables students to showcase and expand their knowledge of biochemistry and related disciplines, while developing the ability to think and communicate as professional biochemists. It challenges students to apply their biochemical understanding to design a scientifically credible pipeline addressing a global issue (such as antimicrobial resistance, therapeutic and diagnostic development, or sustainability) effectively translating biochemical concepts from fundamental research to real-world application.
Teaching is delivered through a combination of workshops, lectures, and guided independent learning.
Assessment comprises two components. The first is a science communication piece including an infographic, explaining in accessible, engaging terms a recent impactful advance in biochemistry, similar to an article in New Scientist, Ars Technica, or a company showcase. The second assessment is a group poster outlining the technical steps required to research and deliver a potential scientific solution to the chosen challenge. This is supported by a short, individually written executive summary in which each student articulates their own understanding of their groups research pipeline.d
