Introduction to the World of Work

Code: BIOS302

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 2

This module provides students with the opportunity to complete a work-based experience, either virtually (if opting for a University of Liverpool approved Virtual Work Based Experience) or in person, during the summer period between Year 2 and Year 3, as well as during term-time in final year. Unless participating in a University of Liverpool–approved Virtual Work-Based Experience, students are responsible for identifying and securing their own work-based experience, which must be approved by the module leader in advance. The work-based experience requires a minimum of 70 hours (equivalent to approximately two weeks of full-time work).

The module will be introduced to students in their second year, providing an overview of the module and guidance on how to identify work-based experience opportunities. Students will be encouraged to begin searching for work-based experience during Year 2, with support from Academic Advisers and the Careers and Employability team. Additional seminar activities will be held in Semester 2 of Year 2 to further prepare students for their work-based experience. Further taught sessions in Semester 2 of Year 3 will include seminars on assessment support, taking positive career management action, networking with employers, skills articulation and reflective group sessions on work-based experiences.

Incorporating a work-based experience provides an opportunity for students to improve skills that are particularly sought after by employers and postgraduate study providers. The module teaching will support students to better recognise, evidence and articulate their skillset to support their future career goals. The module will be assessed via an application and reflective assessment, as well as a reflective case study on their career development
