This module equips students with advanced skills in digital simulation and AI-integrated (non-coded) modelling to predict and optimise building environmental performance. Students move beyond simplified calculations to engage with dynamic thermal modelling, enabling robust analysis of heat transfer, solar gains, airflow, energy demand, and associated carbon emissions.
As a core module of the MSc Net Zero Buildings programme, ARCH717 focuses on the level of technical modelling required to support net-zero and low-carbon design outcomes. Students develop critical insight into how modelling assumptions, boundary conditions, and input data influence results, and how simulation outputs can be used to inform evidence-based design decision-making.
Using industry-standard tools such as ENVI-met, DesignBuilder, and One Click LCA, students undertake energy modelling, environmental performance assessment, and whole-life carbon analysis. The module also introduces AI-supported workflows for data interpretation and optioneering, enabling efficient comparison of low-carbon design strategies and technologies.
By the end of the module, students will be able to produce robust performance assessments and communicate modelling results with confidence, supporting design decisions that respond to international energy, carbon, and climate-performance targets.
