Knowledge Representation

Code: COMP521

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 1

Artificial intelligence systems, autonomous agents, and knowledge-based applications must be able to represent information and reason about what is known, unknown, or inferred. In this module, you will explore the logical foundations of knowledge representation and develop a rigorous understanding of how knowledge and information can be modelled formally.

You will study modal logic and its application to reasoning about knowledge, as well as description logic, a key formalism underlying semantic technologies and knowledge-based systems. Alongside the syntax and semantics of these languages, you will learn how to analyse logical models, perform formal reasoning, and apply proof techniques to establish the validity of logical statements.

By the end of the module, you will be able to translate complex scenarios into formal logical representations, reason about knowledge and inference with precision, and apply mathematical methods to the analysis of intelligent systems and knowledge-based applications.
