Personal Statement

John is from Middleton, north Manchester, and studied chemistry at the University of Manchester graduating with an MChem in 2006 and a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Darren Dixon in 2010. He then moved to the University of Edinburgh as a PDRA working on the design, synthesis and operation of molecular machines in the group of Prof. David Leigh FRS. After two years in Edinburgh, he moved with Prof. Leigh back to the University of Manchester and then in 2014 joined the group of Prof. Jonathan Clayden as a senior PDRA, working in both synthetic and supramolecular chemistry. In 2015 he continued in this role, moving with Prof. Clayden to the University of Bristol until taking up a Research Fellow and Theme Leader position in 2018 at the Leverhulme Research Centre for Functional Materials Design at the University of Liverpool. John was appointed as Lecturer in Chemistry in January 2023.
