Accessible Toilets

What is an Accessible Toilet?

There are 4 main types of accessible toilets found on campus:

  1. Ambulatory Toilet, Cubicle or Urinal: These are most often found within a male or female toilet block and can be identified by the hand rails within the cubicle and that the door swings outwards. The cubicle may also include an emergency pull cord.
  2. Wheelchair Accessible Toilet or Cubicle: These have been designed to enable a wheelchair to enter and manoeuvre with the toilet. Most are standalone unisex toilets, however some are larger cubicles within a male or female toilet. The majority of these will include a right hand transfer arrangement, with a smaller number of left hand transfter, and peninsular (centered) arrangement. These are identified by a wheelchair sign or symbol, and the room will include grab rails and an emergency pull cord.
  3. Wheelchair Accessible Toilet/Wet Room: This is a combination of a toilet and an accessible shower unit.
  4. Changing Places Toilet: These are designed for people who need high levels of assistance, usually from a carer to use the toilet. See Changing Places Toilets locations.

Who can use an Accessible Toilet

An accessible toilet is designed to meet the majority of needs of independent wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments, people with other physical conditions such as impaired dexterity and grip, balance and conditions where physical support from grab rails is needed; as well as people with hidden disabilities such as bowel and bladder conditions (such as colostomy bag users); and people with phobias, learning or behavioural conditions.

Emergency Alarms

The orange/red emergency pull cord is provided to enable an individual either from the toilet or the floor to call for assistance in an emergency. Pulling the cord usually activies a warning light and buzzer on the outside of the toilet. A reset button is available within the toilet if the cord is pulled by mistake.

The cords MUST NOT be tired up, wrapped around rails or removed. It muse be within reach of the toilet, and the floor at all times.

If you hear the emergency alarm go off, please follow the instructions found on the door.

Location of Accessible Toilets on Campus

The table below lists the locations of the closest Accessible Toilet to the main entrance of a building that is publically accessible. The table does not list every Accessible Toilet in a building or on campus, nor does it list toilets that are in restricted / card access areas (unless otherwise stated). The list does not include Ambulant Cubicles. The aim of this list is to help individuals when travelling through the campus to find the closest toilet. What3Words is a location based adress system which you can use to find more precise locations, click on the link to open a map showing location of the accessible toilets.
