‘Credible threat: Attacks Against Women Online and the Future of Democracy’

Digital media and communications, particularly their use and abuse for political purposes, have come under public scrutiny like never before in the wake of recent political developments across the globe. In a world marked by the persistence of a pandemic, escalating international conflicts, and an accelerating climate crisis, citizens, political decision makers, and political and media actors (broadly defined) use digital media to gather information, engage in discussion, and attempt to influence the political agenda in a variety of contexts.

The conference brings together a variety of scholars from across Europe and beyond to analyse and understand the role of digital media in political communication during an era of re-emerging or consolidating authoritarianism, democratic backsliding, and threats to civil rights and liberties. Contributors will examine how digital media can either exacerbate or ameliorate these (and other) challenges from various perspectives.

Additional information:

The conference will be run using a hybrid format so it will be possible for delegates to join us online or in person. The conference will be held in the School of the Arts (19-23 Abercromby Square) on the main city centre campus. The venue is about 15 minutes’ walk (up hill) from the mainline railway station (Liverpool Lime Street). Our proximity to Liverpool city centre means there are a wide variety of hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation available to suit most budgets. There are also a wide variety of places for food/drinks available.

More information about the event and how to register will be published soon!
