Irish Studies

School of Histories, Languages and Cultures

As a modern European nation with a fascinating, although often turbulent, past, Ireland represents an ideal prism for the study of history, literature, and politics. You will not only explore the role of Ireland as an emerging independent nation, but also understand its part in a broader matrix of British and global history. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme provides an interesting and rewarding engagement with this nation’s true personality, to set aside the simplified and stereotypical view of Ireland and its peoples and to focus instead on the diversity and plurality that inform Irish identity.

Irish Studies BA (Hons)

The small classes give the department a really intimate feel. The lecturers get to know you so you feel comfortable to make a valid contribution in lectures and tutorials. They are experts in their fields and keen to share this expertise with you, for example one lecturer arranged for a ceili band to come in to demonstrate the various types of music we had been studying.
