Georgina’s role

Georgina is responsible for co-leading the Thrive project. The main aspects of my role include joint oversight of delivery and liaising with our partner organisations, the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Advance HE and broader UKRI stakeholders.

About Georgina

Georgina studied for her BSc in Geography and my MSc in Archaeology at the University of Liverpool before completing her PhD in Geography at the University of Sheffield. She joined the School of Geography at the University of Nottingham in January 1998, starting as a lecturer and becoming a full Professor in 2012.

In January 2017 Georgina joined the University of Liverpool as APVC for Research and Impact in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and remained in this role until December 2022 when she took on her current APVC position.

Georgina’s research focuses on environmental history, and specifically on climatic history and historical climatology, on human responses to unusual or extreme weather events, conceptualizations of climate variability in historical perspective. She has served as a full REF panellist on the Geography and Environmental Studies panel in the 2021 REF and her past roles have included President of the International Commission for the History of Meteorology and Honorary Secretary for Research and Higher Education at the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers for the maximum of two terms. She has been sift and panel chair for the Future Leaders Fellowship scheme and is part of the FLF mentoring network and regularly participate in panels for AHRC, ESRC, NERC and was the arts and humanities academic representative on the Steering Committee for the UK’s Strategic Priorities Funded Climate Resilience theme. She is a newly elected Fellow of the British Academy (2023).

Georgina is a proud Liverpudlian and was born and brought up not far from where she currently lives now with her partner, two sons and two cats.
