Studying chemistry with us

We create an atmosphere for learning which is both challenging and enjoyable for you. This means frequent individual contact with academic staff in tutorials, workshops and practical classes. An academic advisor will give you one-on-one support from the start of your course and advise you throughout your undergraduate career.

A typical first year week covers a variety of different learning environments, and a downloadable version is available to the right:

  • Lectures: 6-7 hours covering all core aspects of the chemistry course.
  • Labs: 3-6 hours in the central teaching laboratories. For each lab course, you will have a dedicated demonstrator to provide support.
  • Workshops/Tutorials: 4 hours of chemistry problem sessions to reinforce material covered in lectures.
  • Key skills and subsidiary courses: 7-8 hours. This covers maths for chemists and general key skills like essay writing, giving presentations and group work and equality and diversity. You also choose subsidiary modules from either Chemistry options or other departments such as Archaeology, Computer Science, Mathematics/Physics, Oceanography and Open Languages (variable each year)
