Competence Standards

Competence Standards Toolkit

Collators: Dr Kate Evans and Jon Petch

Because competence standards exist within the legal framework of the Equality Act (2010), conflating competence standards with other standards or practices, or with modes of assessment, risks discrimination and adversely impacts students. This toolkit aims to support your understanding of competence standards, and the development of competence standards for your programme.

We gratefully acknowledge the work of others in this area – you will find a full bibliography in element 4 of this toolkit, to enable you to dig deeper into the source material, should you find this helpful. It is our sincere intention that this toolkit will grow in a co-created way, with contributions welcomed from staff, students, and interested parties. Please email cie@liverpool.ac.uk if you would like to contribute material or have suggestions for us. We would particularly welcome additional examples of competence standards to add to our support materials.
