This toolkit is not designed to be used in any particular order, as we recognise that staff will have differing levels of understanding, and support needs. It currently consists of 4 elements:

This short video explains what competence standards are, and how they differ from other standards, requirements, and professional competencies.

Understanding and developing competence standards: a step-by-step guide

This guide takes you through the process of developing competence standards for your course or programme. It explains what competence standards are and how they intersect with the legal framework of reasonable adjustment, and what this means in practical terms for ensuring our teaching, learning and assessment are not discriminatory.

Examples of competence standards

This element of the toolkit includes examples which are, and are not, competence standards, taken from existing guidance. They are limited in scope (few subjects represented at this time), but we hope you will find them helpful in understanding what competence standards look like in practice.

This element of the toolkit contains references for, and links to, the source material which underpins the toolkit, enabling you to dig deeper should you wish to, plus additional resources relating to inclusive assessment and equity in the curriculum.
