Fostering Leave Policy

The University is a ‘Foster Friendly Employer’ with endorsement from The Fostering Network, and seeks to support those who provide foster care for children, recognising the contribution to the community made by foster parents. Find out about the foster care provisions that the University offers, eligibility and how to apply for fostering leave.

Key points

  • Although there is no statutory entitlement to paid time off work for fostering, the University wishes to demonstrate its support for staff members who undertake fostering responsibilities, and accordingly, subject to the conditions set out in the Fostering Leave Policy, staff members are able to take a total of up to five days paid leave (‘Fostering Leave’) per leave year (pro-rated for part time staff) in connection with fostering responsibilities
  • Fostering leave can be used for commitments during the process of becoming a foster carer, settling in a new child, training courses, support groups, meetings and emergencies
  • When a couple involved in a fostering arrangement are both members of staff of the University, both of them will be eligible to access fostering leave under this policy.
