Pay and Reward

We offer a competitive pay structure and generous terms and conditions of employment, alongside mechanisms for progression and reward.

Salary scales

We offer an attractive pay structure via the national pay spine, including provision for annual increments within grades.

We are also a member of the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) national negotiating framework for annual pay awards, providing for a yearly review of salary rates at a national level to ensure rates are consistent with peer institutions.

In recognition of performance, our Annual Review process allows for the consideration of cases for promotion and accelerated incremental progression.

Annual leave and closure days

Our generous annual leave provision amounts to 26 days for support staff and 30 days for PMSA staff (pro-rata for part-time staff), with academic and research staff able to take annual leave at similar levels by local arrangement.

These allowances are offered on top of six University closure days for the Christmas closure period through to New Year for most staff groups and eight bank holidays.

Hours of work and HR policies

The University can boast a wide range of generous terms and conditions and HR policies that far exceed statutory baselines. Our salaries are based on our offer of low base contract hours (35 hours per week for support and PMSA staff, unspecified for academic and research staff). Our HR policies include: a suite of work/life balance and family-friendly policies; provision for paid special leave for compassionate, domestic, or other emergency reasons; provision for paid time off to undertake voluntary work; and opportunities to purchase annual leave

Pensions

We have several competitive pension schemes on offer in order to suit colleagues' circumstances and eligibility. These include generous employer contributions and provisions for ill health retirement and death in service.

Further to this, colleagues can take part in our Pensions Plus scheme, enabling cost-effective pension contributions via salary sacrifice.

Real Living Wage

We are a Real Living Wage accredited employer, and as such are committed to paying whichever is the higher of either the nationally negotiated pay rates or the real Living Wage.

Clinical academic salary scales

The clinical academic pay scales are available on the UCEA website (login required).

Relocation package

A relocation package is available for certain roles, see our relocation pages for more information.

Strategic reward for senior staff policy

The University’s strategic aim is to continue to build a world-class institution and a key part of this is the reward of high performance and excellence in delivery. Find out about our Strategic Reward for Senior Staff Policy.

I feel I am looked after by the umbrella of the University. I feel...the benefits are excellent, and I have a long future working here.
