National Centre for Atmospheric Science

The National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) is a distributed NERC research centre, with staff based at a number of research organisations across the UK, including the University of Manchester. NCAS’s research addresses key environmental issues such as climate change, weather processes and atmospheric composition including air quality.

The Centre uses state-of-the-art technologies for observing and modelling the atmosphere and its research is used by policy makers and the wider UK science base. It comprises three science directorates (climate; weather; atmospheric composition) and four services and facilities providing support to scientists across the UK.

NCAS staff at Manchester will supervise students and provide training in atmospheric science. NCAS will also provide residential training courses which are open to all PhD students working within a relevant area and other bespoke offerings as required by the students. NCAS will also act as a CASE partner placing students in FAAM and BADC.

NCAS is able to provide a comprehensive training programme drawing on the expertise of over 170 UK and international research scientists, from a range of core disciplines including physics, chemistry and mathematics. We place great emphasis on networking opportunities throughout our courses and encourage continuation of this through our ever expanding alumni network.
