I am currently undertaking a NERC DTP funded PhD studentship at the Department of Geography and Planning of the University of Liverpool. The broad theme of my project is assessing the impact of metal mining activity on river catchments, which has an extensive legacy throughout the world. Specifically, my project aims to accurately quantify fine sediment-associated metal residence times in contaminated floodplains. Attempts have been made to estimate how long contaminants remain locked up in catchment stores, but have so far largely neglected the complexity of floodplain structure and riverine sediment dynamics. Results should be important for targeting future erosion and pollution control measures.
