About me

I graduated from Cardiff University in 2011 with a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry. For my final year project I investigated the effects of airborne particulate matter from the 2010 volcanic eruption in Iceland on lung cells using a panel of in vitro assays, and showed that the ash fallout might be a health hazard to people with existing respiratory conditions.

I stayed in Cardiff for a further year to undertake an MSc in Chemical Biology and for my thesis I synthesised photoswitchable DNA binding peptides based on the binding helices of the zinc finger transcription factor Slug. I then used UV spectroscopy and circular dichroism to determine the kinetics and extent of photoswitching.

I joined the Protein Function Group in October 2012 to start my PhD where I will be developing a rapid and accurate point-of-care test for bacterial meningitis, funded by the BBSRC and Badrilla.
