About me

For my undergraduate degree, I chose MSci Forensic and Analytical Science at the University of Huddersfield. The course was ideal for me in that it involved modules in both biology and chemistry, and also offered a year in industry. During the year in industry, I worked in a toxicology lab alongside the police and coroners, where I gained practical experience in the use of various chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques. From then on, I decided my interests lay in mass spectrometry and that I wished to undertake a postgraduate research degree, which would incorporate aspects of biology, chemistry and mass spectrometry.

I was offered a PhD with the Protein Function Group at the University of Liverpool, involving the identification, characterisation and quantification of major urinary proteins in mouse populations using mass spectrometry. During my first year as a postgraduate, I became familiar with the protocols used for the identification and characterisation of these proteins, and gained experience in the use of MALDI-ToF, Waters Synapt G1 and G2, and Waters QToF Micro mass spectrometers. I also undertook theoretical training in statistics, research skills and bioinformatics which I believe will prove useful during the course of my PhD.
