James Lay

First year Medical student

James, a first year Medical student from Sheffield, was first attracted to the University of Liverpool because of its historical and cultural heritage. He said: “Liverpool is well known to be the 'original red brick university' but I was also drawn by the international nature of the University campus - a multi-cultural hub, made up of students all over the world.

“My scholarship has allowed me to buy additional textbooks and reading material for my course which would have otherwise not have been possible. I’ve used some of the funding to buy things to augment and enhance my learning, like Gray’s Anatomy flash cards. It’s also meant I could join the ‘Surgical Scousers’ society who run events, workshops and career days on all aspects of surgery.

“Now I am able to continue my studies and pursue my dream of becoming the best possible doctor I can be for my patients – I hope to be able to advance the knowledge we have on medicine and contribute to improving the healthcare provided to patients worldwide.”
