Civic Design 1952

Master of Civic Design Anniversary

The University of Liverpool is home to the first Planning School in the world, founded in 1909. The flagship programme, Master of Civic Design, was created in 1950 by Gordon Stephenson with the aim of introducing a radically new planning programme based around a two year, taught postgraduate degree.

This year we are celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the first student cohort graduating from that programme in our MCD Platinum Anniversary Celebration for World Town Planning Day 2022.

The programme continues to meet the aspirations of the founder and is as relevant and forward-thinking today as it was in 1952 as evidenced by this anniversary webpage. We have taken this opportunity to reflect on the past, present and future of the RTPI accredited MCD programme as it continues to meet the needs of planning professionals faced with the global challenge of creating sustainable and resilient places.
