Undergraduate Student Doctor Clinical Skills Curriculum 2021/22

This page details what a student will have covered upon completion of each academic year of study. All elements have been mapped to the Outcomes for Graduates (GMC, 2018).

Year 2

Teaching is delivered at the University and builds up on first year content, including pathophysiology. Six weeks are spent at a Trust site undertaking histories, examinations and procedural skills.

  • Basic life support of adult – Mandatory (October)
  • Re-cap of vital signs & intro to NEWS (September)
  • Venepuncture (September)
  • Cranial nerve assessment with common abnormalities (October)
  • Sensory examination on a student (October)
  • Motor examination on a student (November)
  • Recap examination of male genital and rectal (November)
  • Respiratory examination on a student including common abnormalities (December)
  • Cardiovascular examination on a student including common abnormalities (January)
  • Taking a 12 lead ECG (January)
  • Intramuscular and subcutaneous injection technique (January)
  • Gastrointestinal examination on a student including common abnormalities (January)
  • Ophthalmoscopy, Otoscopy & ENT on a student and common abnormalities (March)
  • Examination of lymph nodes of the head & neck, thyroid & swellings on a fellow student (April)
  • Female genitalia examination on a model with common abnormalities (May)
  • Musculo-skeletal examination on a fellow student (May)

Assessment Year 2

Students will undertake their first Assessment for Learning (formative) OSCE within the University. There is no assessment for progression (summative) OSCE for Year 2 students.

There is no formal assessment of clinical skills at the Trusts in Year 2.

Year 3

Students will rotate through a number of different Trusts and through medicine, surgery, paediatrics, GP, obstetrics & gynaecology. Teaching will take place at the University during academic weeks, focusing on speciality specific teaching, completed by January 2021.

  • Speculum examination & obstetric palpation
  • Arterial blood gases
  • Breast examination
  • Urinary catheterisation
  • Child growth (online resources only)
  • Paediatric BLS & adult BLS is delivered as part of mandatory induction.

Assessment Year 3

  • Students Assessment for Learning (formative) OSCE will be undertaken at the Trust sites.
  • Students Assessment for progression (summative) OSCE will be hosted by the University.
  • Students are required to complete a number of Direct Observed Procedural Skills (DOPS). These require the student to ask a staff member beforehand to complete the e-portfolio form.
  • Students are required to complete a number of Observed Examinations (OE). These include history taking, presentation and clinical examinations. They should be completed by a student on each opportunity to practise and uploaded to the e-portfolio.

Year 4

Students will rotate through a number of different Trusts and through medicine, surgery, paediatrics, GP, obstetrics & gynaecology, neurology & psychiatry. Teaching will take place at the University during academic weeks, focusing on speciality specific teaching, completed by January 2021

  • Cannulation & Preparation of an IV fluid line
  • Basic airway management
  • Wound care ANTT & basic closure
  • Paediatric BLS & Adult BLS is delivered as part of mandatory induction.

Assessment Year 4

  • Students Assessment for Learning (formative) OSCE will be undertaken at the Trust sites.
  • Students Assessment for progression (summative) OSCE will be hosted by the University.
  • Students are required to complete a number of Direct Observed Procedural Skills (DOPS). These require the student to ask a staff member beforehand to complete the e-portfolio form.
  • Students are required to complete a number of Observed Examinations (OE). These include history taking, presentation and clinical examinations. They should be completed by a student on each opportunity to practise and uploaded to the e-portfolio.

Year 5

Students will rotate through a number of different trusts and through GP, Surgery, Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Critical care, Psychiatry & Prep for Practice & Ward shadowing. Teaching will take place at the University during the 1st and last academic weeks.

  • Blood cultures & basic suturing (September)
  • Insertion of a nasogastric tube (simulation only, April 2022)

Assessment Year 5

  • Students Assessment for progression (summative) OSCE will be hosted by the University and will take place in March 2022
  • Students are required to complete a number of Direct Observed Procedural Skills (DOPS). These require the student to ask a staff member beforehand to complete the e-portfolio form.
  • Students are required to complete a number of Observed Examinations (OE). These include history taking, presentation and clinical examinations. They should be completed by a student on each opportunity to practise and uploaded to the e-portfolio.
