Research Overview

At a broad level, my research places people at the centre of organizational and entrepreneurial strategies. How do organizations mobilize and deploy human capital in pursuit of their goals? What are the conditions under which such strategies limit the diversity, equity and inclusion of their workforce? As a social scientist and organizational scholar, I subscribe to the view that balancing of these two sides of people strategy is an important foundation from which we can design better organizations.

The more specific research questions that I pursue are always informed by this broader philosophy. Whether that is about the hiring and retention strategies of established organizations or human capital resource mobilization and organizational design of new ventures. Examples of research questions that I have pursued/is pursuing are:

(1) How do organizations manage the inter-firm and entrepreneurial mobility of their employees? What are the implications of such human capital strategies for firms’ competitiveness and inclusivity?

(2) How do organizations balance the competitive pressures with diversity imperative - especially at the very top of the hierarchy? To what extent the internal and external environment of organizations moderate these conditions?

(3) What are the strategic and social implications of pay inequality within organizations?

(4) What are the risks and benefits of intrapreneurship to firms' overall human capital strategy?

(5) Is acqui-hiring an effective human capital strategy? Under what conditions?

Empirically, most of my research focuses on the historical and contemporary labour markets in Sweden and the Netherlands.

The results of my research are published in some of the leading outlets in the area of management and entrepreneurship such as Organization Science (ABS 4* and FT50), Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice (ABS 4 and FT50), Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal (ABS 4 and FT50), Advances in Strategic Management (ABS 2) and Higher Education Policy (ABS 2).
