State of health in the city: Liverpool 2040

In this policy briefing, Professor Matt Ashton (Liverpool City Council’s Director of Public Health) and Eustace de Sousa (interim consultant on public health for Liverpool City Council and Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health) summarise the recent State of health in the city: Liverpool 2040 report.

The briefing describes an unprecedented health and social care crisis facing Liverpool. Taking a forward look to 2040, the report projects that one in four of the adult population will be living with major illness by that time, with the burden of this crisis overwhelmingly facing Liverpool residents in the most deprived areas, as well as women and children. This briefing is a call for action to address these health inequalities, provide local health bodies with the tools and resources needed to improve outcomes, and to develop national policies aimed at creating healthy environments.
