Heseltine Institute Policy Briefing 3(03)

Levelling Up gender inequality in the UK: Leadership and development

Our latest policy briefing, by Emma Ormerod (Lecturer in Economic Geography at Newcastle University) is titled Levelling up gender inequality in the UK: leadership and development

This briefing argues that the UK Government’s ‘Levelling up’ agenda neglects deep-rooted gender inequalities, meaning it will not lead to long-term geographic rebalancing: to achieve this, we need people and place-based approaches. Drawing on a recent paper published in Regional Studies, Emma highlights the importance not only of representation, but embedding equality into policy and practice. Exploring the historic role of women in development and leadership, and the alternative forms of leadership provided, the briefing critiques ‘masculine coded’ regional development orthodoxy.
