Student Experience
During my first year at Liverpool University, I learnt all the necessary skills and techniques which allowed me to gain a place on a summer internship. I actively pursued an internship with the UK Coal Authority and was accepted with them having never taken interns before. During this time I utilised all geological knowledge I had amassed in my first year, whilst also learning new relevant information day to day to further my education.
The Coal Authority is a NDGB which owns and licences all coal within Britain while also dealing with coal mining legacy. My role within the company initially was small, using their archives to determine whether a subsidence claim made was the Coal Authorities' liability or not, and if so what course of action should be taken. However over time my involvement with the company and responsibilities grew, to the point where I was advising project managers and providing evidence to be used in arbitration cases and research and development.
The work with the UK Coal Authority was varied which meant I was able to flex my geological knowledge by interpreting maps, drawing up cross-sections and topographic maps. Within a month my work within the company was recognised and they offered me a salary and further work throughout my degree which would benefit my education and career development. My internship was a major success due to the level of teaching and staff at the University of Liverpool, and the employee's and especially my manager recognised the level of education the University had offered.
