The English Reformation 1509-1553

Monday, 10am - 12pm

Start Date

15 April, 2024

There will be 5 weekly meetings on Monday, 10am - 12pm, starting from 15 April.

Overview

During the reigns of Henry VIII (1509-47) and his son Edward VI (1547-53) the religious scene in England was transformed. Henry broke with Rome but was cautious about reform of the church services themselves but on his death young Edward's ministers pushed forward a radical Protestant agenda. How did this affect the lives of ordinary people in England as the old certainties and rituals were questioned and abandoned?
This course aims to examine the changes that took place in England during these years and the ways in which ideas from the Continent mingled with a peculiar English setting to produce a distinctive Anglican way forward. No prior knowledge is required. Full course notes will be provided together with Audio-Visual material through the Canvas system.
