L’Arts Décoratif: Liverpool in the Age of Jazz, 1918-39

Wednesday, 11am - 1pm

Start Date

17 April, 2024

There will be 5 weekly meetings on Wednesday, 11am - 1pm from 17 April.

Overview

Liverpool in the immediate aftermath of the First World War was a deeply traumatized place, forced to undergo considerable challenges to its economic and commercial status as one of the world's busiest ports, the damage wrought upon personnel and society at large after the Great War was profound. Culturally such challenges were met by a return to opulence and decadence the likes of which, perversely, Liverpool had not experienced since the heady days of the 1880s; whether this be in the design form of lavish new ocean liners at the Pier Head, construction of palatial buildings such as Martin’s Bank, in the latest cutting edge styles, Jazz cafés, cinema houses rivalling theatres, fashion, art and a Lady Lord Mayoress, the 1920s and 30s were nothing if not contradictory. And then there was the Mersey Tunnel... Join us as we explore this fascinating and often overlooked period in Liverpool’s long and already storied history.
