Overview

An opportunity to experience an alternative history of the Port of Liverpool through the campus-based exploration of a range of crucially significant sites in its commercial, economic, cultural and social development - from the first fully enclosed commercial wet-dock in the world (opened 1715), to the secret centre of operations during the Battle of the Atlantic in WWII, and The Cavern; this course will appeal to anyone with an interest in Liverpool, art, architecture, culture and society.

Week 3: St. James’s Cemetery – John Foster Junior, 1827

Week 4: The Customs House – John Foster Junior, 1831-35

Week 5: Liverpool Corporation Waterworks – James Newlands, 1848

Week 6: Liverpool Underground Railway, 1886

Week 7: The Mersey Tunnel (Queensway) – Basil Mott, 1925-33

Week 8: Edwin Luyten’s Cathedral Crypt, 1933-56 

Week 9: Western Approaches – Battle of the Atlantic, 1941-44

Week 10: The Cavern Club, 1958-73

Course Lecturer: Dr Lee Kendall

Dr. Lee R. Kendall was born in Liverpool in 1974 and earned his BA (Hons) in History of Art at University of Leicester in 1997 before going on to complete a PhD in the same subject at Liverpool John Moores University in 2006. An independent art historian with a particular interest in all things Liverpool related, his publications include “Being for the Benefit of… Beatles Art in Liverpool” (2012). He has been part of the front of house team at Tate Gallery, Liverpool since 2009 and has lectured for the University of Liverpool's CE Department since 2019.
