Changing of the Light: A Practical Journey through Impressionist Themes

Saturday, 10.30am - 4.30pm

Start Date

20 April, 2024

There will be 6 weekly meetings on Saturday, 10.30am - 4.30pm, starting from 20 April.

Overview

Join us for a six-week course that will take you on a journey through the fascinating world of Impressionism. Designed as a series of practical workshops, this course will equip you with the skills you need to explore the underlying ideas and processes that define this iconic artistic movement.
Led by experienced instructors, the course will introduce you to the art of drawing from life models and capturing the environment en plein air, and translating these observations into paint with a focus on changing light and colour. Whether you're a seasoned artist or a newcomer to the world of Impressionism, this course is the perfect way to deepen your knowledge and hone your skills.
While prior experience in drawing is useful, it is not essential for this course. We'll be conducting outdoor work at Ness Gardens and Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, and life drawing and drypoint print sessions will be held on campus.
This six week workshop series opens with a one day theory workshop, 'Painting in the Modern World' and is followed by 5 practical workshops. The series is your chance to explore the vibrant world of Impressionism, and develop your artistic skills in a supportive, creative environment. Sign up today and start your journey of discovery!

Session 1: 20/4/24: Painting the Modern World: Impressionism (Dr Judith Walsh)
In this session, we will explore the key themes, concepts and methods of Impressionism in nineteenth century France and consider the often radical and avant garde works of key artists such as Manet, Monet, Degas, Cassatt and Morisot. This session will enable you to recognize, interpret and understand the aesthetic characteristics of the Impressionist painters. Participants will also gain an understanding of social and economic context and be able to analyse the subject matter and critical reception of the paintings under discussion.

Session 2: 27/4/24: Practical explorations from impressionism: An introduction to drawing from the model (Mr Tony O'Connell)

Session 3: 4/5/24: Practical explorations from impressionism: An introduction to painting in the landscape – en plein air at Ness Gardens (Mr Tony O'Connell)
