Ancient Mesopotamia: The Babylonian Empire

Saturday, 10am - 4pm

Start Date

15 June, 2024

Saturday 10am - 4pm

Overview

With the fall of Assyria in 612BC the dominant power in Mesopotamia was once again Babylon. The so called Neo-Babylonian empire was created by Nabopolassar and his son Nebuchadnezzar II. Babylon was transformed by buildings such as the legendary Hanging Gardens. But its glory days were short lived, and less than 25 years after Nebuchadnezzar died the city was taken by Cyrus II of Persia in 539BC. It lingered on for centuries but its reputation, especially as portrayed in the Bible, meant that it has stayed in the imaginations of people to this day.
This course aims to provide participants with an introduction to the period with studies of the personalities and events provided by the Babylonians themselves alongside the narratives and prophecies of the Bible.
No prior knowledge is required and the course is open to all those with an interest in this period of ancient history.

1. The re-emergence of Babylon 626-605BC
2. Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar 605-562BC
3. End of Empire 562-539BC
4. The strange afterlife of Babylon 539BC - present day
