The department offers funding to support undergraduate and postgraduate students in the disciplines of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology at the University of Liverpool.

Postgate Scholarship for Postgraduate Study in Classics and Ancient History (MA)

The Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology is pleased to invite applications for one scholarship to support one Master’s-level student in Classics and Ancient History.  The successful candidate will receive a one-off fee reduction of £4,000.  

The competition is open to all students who have applied for the Classics and Ancient History MA programme by 1 July and commence study in the 2022/23 academic year.

Rankin Scholarships for Postgraduate Study in Egyptology (MA)

Rankin Postgraduate Scholarship in Near Eastern Studies (MA/MSc)

The Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology is pleased to invite applications for one scholarship to support one Master’s-level student in Near Eastern Studies. The successful candidates will receive a one-off fee reduction of £4,000

The competition is restricted to students who have applied to undertake research in Near Eastern Studies, as part of the Archaeology MA/MSc programme by 1 July and commence study in the 2022/23 academic year.

Rankin Postgraduate Scholarship in Near Eastern Studies (MA/MSc)

Peet Travel Award (Second Round Spring / Summer 2024)

The Peet Travel Award is available to support travel and associated costs for research into the archaeology and languages of the pre-Classical Mediterranean, including Egypt and the Near East, Greece and the Italian Peninsula.

Travel should be to the Mediterranean or other locations (such as Museums and Universities) where relevant material or archives are housed. Travel can also involve participation in an archaeological project, relevant summer school or similar activity. Please note that the range of awards is normally between £200-500.

The scheme is open to any postgraduate researchers and Masters candidates undertaking research in a relevant area. Postgraduate researchers who have been awarded funding from the Peet Travel Award for two consecutive years in the past are not eligible to apply.

The deadline for applications is 22 March 2024 (5pm). Completed forms should be returned by email (marked as “Peet Travel Award” in the subject line) to Violaine Chauvet at vchauvet@liverpool.ac.uk by this date.

The Chris Mee Mediterranean Travel Award

The Chris Mee Mediterranean Travel Award has been created in memory of Professor Chris Mee to support undergraduate and taught postgraduate students in the disciplines of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology at the University of Liverpool.

The purpose of the Award is to facilitate travel to the Mediterranean region* where the recipients might take part in study tours, such as those with the British School at Athens, or participate on an archaeological field project to gain a better understanding of the archaeology of the Ancient Greek World (covering any point from Prehistory to the Hellenistic Period).

Two awards of up to £700 each will usually be given each year.

*For the purposes of the award we define the Mediterranean region as including all of the islands and the land around the Mediterranean Sea.

How to apply

To apply for this Travel Award, complete the application form The Chris Mee Travel Award Application Form and send it to your academic advisor to provide you with a reference.

Academic advisors are asked to evaluate the application fully in the space provided on the form, indicating how the proposed travel will be of benefit to the applicant’s development.

Society of Antiquaries of London: Tessa and Mortimer Wheeler Memorial Travel Awards

Two awards of up to £500 each will usually be given each year.

The Society of Antiquaries of London makes a number of travel awards each year to assist undergraduate or first-year postgraduate students studying archaeology at a UK university to gain archaeological fieldwork experience in addition to their degree studies, away from their home base and ideally abroad. Grants of up to £500 will be made toward travel and travel-related expenses.

The awards are in memory of Tessa Verney Wheeler (1893 -1936) and Sir Mortimer Wheeler (1890- 1976).

The deadline for applications is 15 January annually.
