Partner & Associate Schools

Our approach to building Schools Partnerships lies in the University’s ethos that the most effective way of working with schools and colleges to improve access to higher education, is to support capacity building at school level and to achieve lasting culture change in schools, particularly where HE participation rates are low.

The Widening Participation and Outreach Team has a growing target list of local Partner and Associate primary and secondary schools on which it focuses its wide range of outreach activities. This focused approach to targeting aims to provide disadvantaged pupils with a long-term and sustained programme of activities throughout their school career that raises aspirations and awareness of HE, as well as supporting attainment and access.

Partner and Associate schools are offered a progression curriculum of outreach activity which includes work with feeder primary schools, whole year interventions for Years 7 and 8, with increasingly targeted interventions from Year 9 onwards. At post-16, we maintain our approach of targeting individual learners, with an increasing focus on supporting schools and colleges to encourage learners to consider progression to a research intensive HEI, in particular, supporting applicants to the University of Liverpool through our Scholars programme.

Schools are targeted on the following basis:

Partner schools

Partner secondary schools will be targeted on the following basis:

  • Schools that the University has an established formal relationship with
  • Greater than 60% of pupils living within the 13,000 most deprived wards nationally, as identified by IMD, AND:
  • % of pupils eligible for free school meals currently above the national average.

Associate schools

Associate secondary schools will be identified along broadly similar lines, with more flexibility to include schools falling just outside these criteria and in consideration of individual school specialisms.

A number of feeder primary schools for the Partner and Associate secondary schools are identified based on the % of pupils eligible for free school meals being currently above the national average.
