Liverpool hosts NanoMed Europe 2023 conference

The University of Liverpool, in collaboration with the European Technology Platform for Nanomedicine (ETPN) and the British Society of Nanomedicine (BSNM), has hosted the Nanomed Europe (NME) conference for the first time. This prestigious four-day event is Europe’s largest event dedicated to nanomedicine.

Organised by Dr Neill Liptrott from the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology, NME23 brought together scientists, technology providers, entrepreneurs, industry, regulators and clinicians for a range of lectures and sessions including talks on the use of nanomedicine and nano-enabled medical devices to address unmet clinical needs and rare diseases.

Other sessions focused on quality assurance and regulatory issues around the development of nanomedicines, with Dr Liptrott chairing the session on nanotoxicology and biosafety.

Keynote speakers included:

  • Prof. Molly Stevens, Imperial College London - 'Designing nanomaterials for therapeutics and ultrasensitive biosensing.'
  • Prof. Yvonne Perrie, University of Strathclyde - 'Enhancing the delivery of next generation RNA therapies through formulation design.'

In collaboration with ELRIG, NME23 also incorporated a plenary session on complex medicines and next-generation therapeutics, comprising on key industry stakeholders who gave their views on the development of nanomedicines from bench to bedside.

Dr Liptrott said “NME23 was a fantastic event, supported so well by the University’s conference team. In addition to the scientific content, we provided a vibrant atmosphere for networking and collaboration, all with a uniquely Liverpool feel. Attendance by early career researchers was key to ensuring a dynamic event, and to give ECRs a platform to share their work. This resulted in the awards for best posters and best presentations being dominated by ECRs. It was a pleasure to host all of the delegates, and see so many old and new friends in person.”

Professor Ray Schiffelers, Chair of ETPN said “Liverpool hosted a great edition of NME! A great line-up of speakers with two impressive keynotes formed the basis for a great meeting. There was also a lot more: welcome cocktails in the Liverpool Museum and a Gala Dinner on the docks. It was wonderful to meet with our community and experience Liverpool at the same time. Thanks to the local organisers for all their efforts in creating such a successful event.”

Professor Steve Conlan, Chair of BSNM said “Bringing together the BSNM and ETPN annual events in such a spectacular series of venues coupled with the gloriously sunny Liverpudlian weather was a recipe for success.  With world class talks, and incredible scientific presentations from early career researchers, it is clear Nanomedicine has a bright future.”
