Professor Deirdre Lane opening the Forum

The University of Liverpool recently hosted the annual Northern Vascular Biology Forum (NVBF), bringing together vascular researchers from 12 universities in the North of England to discuss their most recent findings.

The Forum was organised by Dr Jill Madine from ISMIB and Dr Richard Rainbow from ILCaMS, and opened by Professor Deirdre Lane on behalf of Liverpool Centre for Cardiovascular Science. The keynote lecture was delivered by Professor Kennedy Cruickshank from Kings College London on the topic of Measuring and Using Arterial Function in Humans. Presentations were primarily given by early careers researchers with topics ranging from 'E-cigarettes: not the harmless alternative we imagined' to therapeutic targeting of inflammatory responses to improve vascular function.

From the University of Liverpool, Dr Riaz Akhtar (Engineering) spoke about underlying factors associated with aortic aneurysms and Avnish Verma, PhD student from Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine on his research into drug-mediated impairment of vascular tone and avenues for recovery. In addition, there were poster presentations from early career researchers from across the Faculty and the wider University.

Congratulations also go to Fada Alanazi (CMM) for winning a prize for their poster on identifying differentially expressed genes and functional activity of ion channels and receptors in rat vascular tissues.

Jill Madine and Rich Rainbow said: "We wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who attended for making the Northern Vascular Biology Forum meeting, hosted at the Spine building, such a success. We were delighted with the large turn out, and the engagement from the audience in the presentations and in the poster sessions. We are also grateful to British Heart Foundation for sponsoring the event."

Next year’s meeting will be held in Manchester and will be advertised in the summer.
